With the holidays upon us there is one very big topic that no one talks about openly but must be addressed, at least by me. The delightfully taboo topic is Re-Gifting. Re-Gifting is something that everyone does and one must master this ancient art to avoid a nasty embarrassment.
Is the gift Re-Giftable?
There are a few items that are strictly off-limits, these include handmade, one-of-a-kind and signed items. Certainly do not Re-Gift free promotional items!
Is it New?
Only new in the package items in excellent condition may be Re-Gifted. Never-ever use partially used gift cards or items that have spent more time in your garage than on a store shelf. Rule of thumb: if you have to dust it off don’t give it.
Who gave it to you?
It is only acceptable to Re-Gift when you know who it originally came from and are certain that they won’t have a chance encounter to reveal what you have done. Keep a pen and post-it notes in your gift closet to write the name of the original giver and date. This will come in very handy when trying to decide on a new recipient.
Will it be well received?
It is best to refrain from giving a gift for the sake of giving a gift. Make sure your recipient will actually appreciate the item, if not, a gift card is a much better choice.
How does it look?
Gift bags can be reused if they are in PRISTINE condition. Please, please, please do not try to reuse wrinkled gift bags. It is never acceptable to reuse tissue paper or wrapping paper, regardless of their condition.
How is your conscience?
If the decision is made not to reveal that you are Re-Gifting, will you be able to be free of guilt? If not, don’t do it. Charities always welcome unwanted items.
As long as you are confident the gift is something your recipient will enjoy, it is in good condition, is suitable for giving and is presented in a lovely manner, you can rest easy. Know that the original giver got their money’s worth – even if you weren’t the one using it.
Happy gifting!!
Jennifer
